Program overview
I-DIEM community-crafted resilience solutions are strategies and measures designed and implemented by local communities to address the challenges posed by climate change and other disasters. These solutions are developed in a bottom-up approach, with active involvement and ownership from the community members themselves. Community-crafted resilience solutions recognize that local communities and community-based organizations have valuable knowledge, insights, and experiences that can inform effective adaptation and mitigation efforts.
Current Activities
I-DIEM was founded with the belief that all people have a right to participate in building resilience to climate change impacts for the communities in which they live and work. Since 2019, I-DIEM has engaged in activities that foster community resilience to disasters and climate change, while encouraging government leaders to have confidence in the voices of the people on how resilience building is implemented. Our projects that promote empowerment and give voice include:
Muted: Climate Marginalization in America, the Documentary
The perspectives of poor Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) communities has never been trusted, acknowledged or respected, even in the climate resilience space.
Bridging Resources for Underserved & Indigenous Populations in Landfall Disasters (BUILD)
Communities face diverse climate-related challenges based on their geographical location, culture, and socioeconomic circumstances.
Equity Response Team (ERT) Deployments
I-DIEM ERTs are deployable teams, trained to connect with community-based organizations, engage with community members, identify instances of disaster inequities and report their findings to local, state and federal government leaders.
Policy Influence and Information Exchange
I-DIEM’s commitment to community crafted resilience has established it as a trusted voice of experience and authority in the field and led to numerous (7) congressional testimonies and meaningful policy changes centered in humanity.
Global Outreach Centers
As a global organization focused on climate equity and building community resilience, I-DIEM has pledged to increase our support of other nations by establishing Global Outreach Centers to collaboratively tackle the challenges posed by climate change and ensure a sustainable future for all.
The process of crafting resilience solutions involves participatory decision-making, where community members actively engage in identifying challenges, setting priorities, and designing and implementing strategies. This approach ensures that solutions align with the needs and aspirations of the community. Resilience solutions need to be dynamic and adaptive to changing circumstances, as climate impacts may evolve over time. Community-crafted approaches often incorporate mechanisms for monitoring, evaluation, and adjustments to ensure ongoing effectiveness.
I-DIEM CCRS are effective and sustainable approaches to address climate change challenges. They complement and strengthen top-down policies and programs by leveraging local knowledge, fostering community cohesion, and building adaptive capacity from the grassroots level upwards.
